Industrial floors usually means all those applications where ceramic material is submitted to heavy stresses of mechanical, chemical or abrasive type (factories, laboratories, supermarkets, storages, etc.).

Hardness, water-absorption, resistance to acid attacks and to stains, hygiene, easy cleaning are peculiar features making the non-glazed porcelain stoneware the material that best adapts to this type of use.

Let us now see in detail certain of the more important aspects to take into consideration when choosing materials to tile industrial floors:
  • resistance of the surface to wear: the intense passing of people and means creates a high abrasive stress
  • resistance of the material to the attack of aggressive chemical agents (typical situation in laboratories and production areas)
  • non dirty, easy cleaning and maintenance: it is necessary for the floor's features to prevent the forming of stains and rings or allow their immediate removal, enabling to maintain the necessary hygienic conditions
  • mechanical resistance (fixed loads and in motion): it is necessary to evaluate with attention the thickness of the material, sealer and screed. The stresses imposed by the passing of means like elevator trolleys, trucks, forklifts impose accurate choices to avoid very heavy loads or accidental fall of materials can damage floor and substrate
  • anti-slip property: the correct choice of the surfaces allows staff to work safely, even in situation where a constant presence of liquids exists; these evaluation assume an even greater importance in the realisation of ramps for the passing of vehicles, where it is necessary to carry out attentive evaluations with regard to draining of the waters
  • unchangeability of the material in time: it is fundamental that production does not suffer interruptions, discomforts or bad services due to the need to restore flooring or to carry out excessively invasive maintenance interventions
  • colour scheme: the correct choice of colours can determine a greater visual comfort of the work environment
  • transitability: It should always be remembered that in industrial contexts the floors are typically subject to the transit of wheeled vehicles that produce both compression on the slabs and a shearing force. For this reason, when using porcelain tile it is necessary to verify that the vehicles that will transit on the floor have rubber wheels, a feature that enables better distribution of the weight on the floor surface, avoiding any stresses due to point loads.
  • planarity of the surface: fundamental feature to guarantee the smoothness of the means on wheels and protect the integrity of the flooring.

To guarantee an installation suited to the intended use, it is also absolutely necessary that the laying be carried out expertly: the screed must be structured in the most suitable way in relation to the intended use; the substrate must not have any voids, the joints must be properly filled, and the expansion joints must be correctly placed. All this will allow the ceramic material to work to its fullest potential.
