Type of signals

The tactile feature Loges is realised by means of inserting special relief tiles in the flooring, which "codes" are easily detectable under the fee or with a white stick.
There are two fundamental basic signals: the straight direction and the stop or danger signal.

Straight direction signal
The straight direction signal is made of a 60 cm large guide, containing relief channels/bars with differentiated distance from the centre to the edges. It is to be walked on ensuring that feet are parallel to the straight signals and at every step, the user realises whether he is walking straight or diverting to the side: in this way it is easy to follow the "tactile guide".

Indication stop or danger

Stop or danger signal
The second fundamental signal is that of stop or danger informing the user not to go further. It is made of a strip of tiles having relief domes easily perceived under the feet.

This signal is placed along rail platforms, in correspondence of the yellow strip signalling the blind the area near the railtrack on which one must not stand.
Whereas, if it is placed on the edge of a pavement, this signal indicates that one must not cross the road from that point.

Second level signals
All other signals are called of second level: they are not essential, but give useful information.

The main signal of compulsory turning is made of a square, divided by a diagonal line into two triangles: one has the relief domes informing not to proceed in a certain direction, the other contains oblique lines joining the two straight path outlines.

Indication attention-service
attention-service
The signal of attention or service warns that attention must be paid in a certain point of the tactile guide (for example, because overstepping a door) or that near the path (on the right or on the left, depending on which side the signal has been placed) there is an object of interest, like for example a telephone, a tactile map or, in a station, the ticket machine.
This signal is made of a series of relieve lines, fine and thin, perpendicular to the direction.

A further signal is that of passable danger, informing that an obstacle along the path can be overcome with caution.
Such indication is placed for example in the passage from pavement to the road site or just before descending steps.
It is obtained by installing a 20 cm strip of attention or service signal (thin lines, perpendicular to direction), followed by a strip, again 20 cm, of danger signal (dome).

The system functions in that the signal which is perceived better is that of stop or danger. To understand how to behave, it is sufficient that the user rests the feet on the surface made of domes: if this is so reduced to welcome only the length of the feet, it means it is a passable danger; in case the user manages to rest both feet on the domes, one in front of the other, the signal is that of stop or danger.

Indication T-junction
T-junction
The "T" crossed signal is placed in the point in which the tactile path offers a choice of turning right, left or continuing straight and it is made of a square tile covered by many slightly protruding discs.

Placing the signals
In large public places, like squares, stations or airports, a guided path is present leading to the different services present in the place (benches, bar, ticket-office, waiting rooms, platforms, etc.).

The location of the various services is usually indicated on a tactile map reproducing the path followed by the guide, with indications in Braille and in normal relief characters (making them also legible to the partially sighted).

The complete paths must also be present on the railway and underground stations platforms, as they are extremely dangerous areas, often lively and crowded. Whereas, on the city pavements, where there are natural guides like, for example, walls, building walls, hedges, continuous guides are not necessary: therefore, there will not be tactile paths, but tactile signals.

In fact, it is sufficient to signal the stops of transport means, pedestrian crossings and entrances to particularly important buildings (post offices, surgeries, public offices, etc.).
