In May 2005 Bologna Fiere S.p.A., within the initiative MARKITEKTURE, realised during the 2005 edition of the CERSAIE review, announced the Concorso Nazionale di Progettazione “Ceramica e Riqualificazione Urbana” (National Design Competition "Urban Requalification and Ceramic"), aimed at developing new urban architectural solutions through the use of Italian ceramic tile. The communes of Bologna, Genoa, Rimini, Sassuolo and Verona signalled the urban sectors to be requilified, become the purpose of the Competition.

The Commune of Sassuolo proposed the requalification of the square in front of the secondary school “G. Pascoli”, a small residue space obtained from the moving back of the school front, compared to the street edge. The requests of the assignee were, in particular: the reformulation of the trampling floor, interventions of urban furnishing, the reorganisation of the existing services and the addition of parking areas.

The feasible project was filed in November 2007 and in December 2008 the public space was launched.

Technology

The announcement of competition required the innovative use of ceramic materials: we thought that the mosaic used for the seat could behave like a sort of fabric, given its ability to adapt to the different volumetric situations of the surface.

We have used the ceramic slabs 40x80 cm for the floor tiling: the Ecotech/ collection of Floor Gres, realised with a patented mixture that recycles the industrial manufacture residues. Given the size of the square, 1.200 m2, the challenge was to lay these floor tiles without visible joints and, however, spaced a maximum of 1 cm (a very reduced escape considering the strong thermal expansions to which an area in the open is subject to and the size of the slab).
