VQ Ventiquattro Radisson Sas Residence
Dubai, EAU
Hotel projects - 5.000m2

The VQ Ventiquattro Radisson SAS Residence tower is in Dubai Marina, an area of Dubai City characterised by the passing of artificial channels, a touristic port and shops and cafes. The palace is exactly between Jumeriah beach and Internet City, a perfect cross-section between the two souls of the city, business and touristic. The project was commissioned to Studio Matteo Nunziati of Milano by Radisson SAS.

Architect Nunziati, will you give us some information on the project?

VQ is a 20 floor tower with 152 apartments of 23 different types and sizes of around 150 m2. Some of these apartments are already rented and some purchased, as envisioned by the client They all offer a complete hotel service, using a very fashionable formula in the USA also. furnished apartment with first class hotel service that includes meals, entertainment, laundry and so on.

The leading idea was that to realise a very high level project for top class customers, using only materials and products designed and realised in Italy. This is unusual in Dubai because, despite taking inspiration from very luxurious standards, for economical reasons, foreign architectural offices often use tiles and furniture made in China, imitating the Italian style.

Whereas, which is the philosophy that inspires Studio Matteo Nunziati?

We want to use a concept of authentical, unostentatious luxury, linked to understatement, that envisions caring for every detail, of every interior design aspect. And to do this, our work is inspired by top quality and an unceasing research.

How long did this project take?

It lasted 3 years and involved the most important Italian design trademarks. We have used Floor Gres of Florim for ceramic tiles, for kitchen furniture Varenna, Feg and Salvarani, for the lighting, both technical and decorative, Fontana Arte and, for the bathrooms, Rapsel.

Can you illustrate how the ceramic material was used?

Globe of Floor Gres dominates the interior of the 152 apartments, with natural finishes for floors and bush-hammering for walls. The material resembles stone without slavishly imitating it: in fact, it gives back materic and chromatic fullness, donating the ambient a natural sense of elegance and harmonious simplicity. Luxury is perceived not only through the eye, but also through touching, through light.

Ecotech/ was used for all outdoor areas (lounge, parking and terraces), sintered porcelain stoneware, result of the Florim research aimed at re-using and re-cycling the industrial manufacturing residues. Ecotech/ was the first project, realised at industrial level, that re-uses dusts, mixes and residues from the manufacturing of other products, to create a new material with materic design, where the mixed flakes and grains create an original mxing effect. Again, the aesthetical value is superior to stone, with advantages not to be undermined: ceramic lasts longer because it does not absorb, a lot more practical and functional in terms of maintenance and costs less.

The swimming pool on the first floor was completely tiled with Ecotech/ 60x60: a stimulating challenge since the material was not created for this type of use, but in terms of technical performances, nothing prevented it from being used. The experiment was a success also thanks to the precious advise received from the company during laying. The result is that we have realised a swimming pool that seems excavated in a rock.

What can you tell us about the launching of VQ?

The launching took place in Spring 2008 with buffet, music and amazing fireworks, in the presence of hundreds of guests. It was also broadcast nationally on television: not so much because the tower represents a challenge won at the verticalisation of American style to which the constuctions on that side of the world inspire, but because it represents an example of real luxury, of quality in detail, elements that, more and more, interest the Middle East purchasers. This is not only the case for Dubai, but also for China, where we are realising very high quality projects. It is ours the task to educate to quality and sustainability.
